Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Angas Armanasco Stakes is a Group 2 Australian thoroughbred horse race held under set weight conditions, for fillies aged 3 years old, over a distance of 1600m. It is held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne every February.

Many of the race's contestants will come via the Group 2 Vanity Stakes (1400m) or the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1500m). Named after the Australian Racing Hall of Fame horse trainer, Angus Armanasco. His career began as a jockey in Perth and then progressed into training for which he won seven Victorian Trainer Premierships.

The Angas Armanasco Stakes is the ideal lead-up race to the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m) held on Flemington's Super Saturday.

In 2010, the MRC reduced the Angus Armanasco Stakes to a distance of 1400 metres and changed the race conditions from set weights only to a set weights & penalties race. The changes were made to coincide with the VRC's decision to reduce the Gr2 Kewney Stakes (run 2 weeks later) to 1400 metres on Super Saturday of Racing at Flemington in March.
